Overview of the Training
Ensuring the mental well-being of seafarers is crucial, especially given the unique challenges they face at sea. Therefore, the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) provides specialized Maritime Mental Health Awareness Training to effectively address these challenges. Moreover, this training equips participants with essential skills to support their colleagues’ mental health.
Training Modules
The training comprises three key modules:
- Introduction to Mental Health: In this module, participants learn about mental health, address stigma, and explore essential terminology.
- Recognizing Signs and First Response: Furthermore, this module helps participants identify signs of mental health struggles. In addition, it introduces Psychological First Aid (PFA) for initial responses, which is vital for effective intervention.
- Suicide Prevention: Finally, this advanced module offers a deeper understanding of suicide awareness, risk factors, and prevention strategies.
Target Audience
Moreover, this training suits seafarers in the Merchant Navy and superyacht industries. It is also ideal for shoreside service providers, Wellbeing Champions, chaplains, and welfare workers. Additionally, ISWAN welcomes requests from those in other seafarer-facing support roles and can customize training content to meet specific organizational needs.
Delivery Format
Currently, ISWAN delivers courses online as live, interactive sessions. Once international restrictions allow, ISWAN plans to resume face-to-face training as requested.

Participants have praised the training for its engaging and informative content. For instance, a personnel member from MHG Insurance stated, “The training was engaging, informative, and has started a lot of conversations in-house!
